Masters Family Photos

In 1858 William Masters (1831/2, Wittersham, Kent - 1898) and Caroline Coley (1836, Frittenden - 1877) came to Australia from Kent, England on sailing ship 'The Castilian'. Caroline Coley already had a relative, at Denham Court, near Ingleburn who had arrived in the Colony of New South Wales many years before. The relative was Jacob Coley her grandfather started a new family here. For that family the family name 'Coley' become 'Cooley'.

First photo is the grave of William Masters with his second wife Lydia Kate Wilson at Rookwood cemetery in Sydney. Caroline the first wife who had died many years earlier, is buried nearby in an unmarked grave. The cause of Caroline's death is unknown, however I feel the reason most likely would have been diabetes as many descendents have been diagnosed with the illness. When Caroline died around the ago of 40 in 1877 insulin had not been identified as a medicine which prolongs the life of those who have the illness.

The second photo is Betty & John GOW a few weeks before their marriage which occurred on 7th June, 2003. Betty nee Martin was prev. m. to Gillard. Betty's mother was Lydia Irene Martin, nee Masters.

The third photo is Keith Sweeney with his neice Jeanette Doria, nee Robinson. Keith's mother was Mabel Sweeney, nee Masters.

The forth photo shows brothers Nigel & Mark Gillard, the sons of Betty.

Then there are two photos of Samantha Screaigh, and a photo of her brother Dakota.

The 8th photo was taken immediately after Betty and John Gow's marriage outside the church. The picture shows Judith Middleton, nee Johnson with her mother Nancy Johnson, nee Lord. Nancy's mother was Edi(th) Masters.

The ninth (last) photo is Adam Masters, the uncle of Samantha and Dakota.

GEORGE HICKMOTT and CLARRISA ROSE arrived Nelson,
New Zealand on 8th June 1875

The first 4 pictures are near Collingwood, on the main South Island of New Zealand. The pictures are of the original farm the Hickmotts owned & developed. Those people in these pictures all attended the reunion. When George Hickmott came to the area he brought considerable experience in farming in the same wasy as was performed back in England.

At Easter 2000 a Hickmott 125th family reunion took place at Nelson. My son Adam & I attended the event at Nelson. On the second day a bus trip took us to Collingwood where this picture was taken. The trip to Collingwood passed by the Hickmott Caves where marble was mined & used in the building of the Nelson Cathedrale.
We also visited the cemetery near Collingwood (the next 3 pictures.) The tall stone covers the grave of George & Clarrisa. The grave of Maurice Ivan Hickmott is in the fifth photo. The grave of Ira John Hickmott is shown in the sixth photo.

The second last picture was taken at the reunion at Nelson.
The last picture is the Nelson Cathedral at Nelson. The marble at the came from the Hickmott Caves. Several books have been published covering the New Zealand Hickmott family.
"Hickmott Centennial 1875 - 1975", and "The Hickmotts in New Zealand" are two of the books, available from Alison Carter. Please e-mail me for Alison's contact details.
Another book called "Collingwood To The Heaphy Track - A Journey Up the Aorere Valley", by Carol Dawber of Picton in the Southern New Zealand island, contains many pictures covering this part of the Hickmott family, and those other families who lived in these parts. Please e-mail me for Carol's contact details.

Events prior to Easter in 2000

I met Ruth Sills (now Ko) nee Doust and her brother David Harold Doust, both descendents of David Doust, (son of Sam Doust & Eliza Boorman) of the Clarence River.
The first picture back row: me, Ruth, David
front row: Alana the daughter of Ruth.

The second picture is of Ruth & her brother David Harold Doust, together with his bus. David is now in New Zealand, however he was at Witternoom for many years. He ran a hostal & ran tours of the area.

The third picture is a gathering of descendents of the families of Eliza Boorman/Sam Doust & Eliza's brother James Boorman/Jane Watts in Sydney a week latter.

The 4th photo was received from Marlene Doust of Palmwoods, Queensland. The photo features baby David Doust in the arms of his mother Eliza Doust (nee Boorman). David emigrated to Australia when he was a young adult & set up his home in the Clarence River Area of New South Wales. Marlene tells me that the photo was passed down to succeding generations in Australia after David' death. Lilian Winkley, nee Doust passed the photo to Marlene. The local descendants call the photo 'Five Generations' photo, however there is a problem as the other 3 women cannot be identified. If you can identify the 3 women please e-mail me. The original photo most likely taken late 1836 by G. Pickett, Photographer, 80 High Street, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England. I believe the other woman are most likely from either of the Boorman/Hickmott/Doust families. Perhaps the lady behind Eliza is a sister, with Eliza's mother and mother in law on the sides!

James Boorman, Eliza Boorman & Thomas Boorman who m. Fuller (mentioned previously on this page) were all children of William Boorman & Ruth Hickmott of Lamberhurst.

Photos from Terry Boorman of British Columbia, Canada. His Boorman ancestor came from Wandsworth.

I first made contact with Terry in 1999. Shortly prior to that Terry had been involved with a Canadian Boorman reunion.

The first 4 pictures are at that reunion where Terry is delivering his speech. Terry's father was born in California, his grandfather was born in Kent, & his great grandfather William Scoons Boorman was born in Wadsworth about 1842.

The 5th picture is the Norton part of the family. Rita West nee Norton is the 2nd person from the left. Rita's great grandfather Thomas Boorman (jnr) was born in Wandsworth. Thomas m. Naiomi Brownsmith

The 6th picture is of the Scoons part of the family.
