Cork Appointees 1816-1840 From LDS FHL film # 0856057 Volume 2

The following records are transcribed from FHL microfilm. The records of the appointees to the Irish Constabulary (established in 1822, then known as the Royal Irish Constabulary from 1867 through 1922) are from all counties in Ireland.

A commercial index exists on microfiche at the LDS library in Salt Lake, but it is my understanding that this is under copyright, therefore does not circulate to FHC's. There is however a partial index on microfilm available through family history center's on the following film:
Index 1816-1867 (v.43); index 1868-1883 (v.44)- This is a partial index by first letter of surname and then chronologically by service number. The supplemental service records also include indexes.

The most comprehensive work known to date on Royal Irish Constabulary Records, with a complete index of the 85,000 or so men who were members, has been written by Jim Herlihy, himself a member of the Garda Síochána. This work can be found at the publisher's website, Four Courts Press, ISBN 1-85182-502-9, €55/US67.50.

The original service records include the following information:
1. Service Number
2. Name
3. Age when appointed
4. Height
5. Native County of birth
6. Religion
7. If married, Date & Number of Authority granting permission
8. Native county of Wife
9. Recommendations- By whom recommended, magistrate, JP, etc.
10. Trade or calling
11. Appointment or reappointment date
12. Allocation (to what county & order of service in each)
13. Transfers
14. Promotion or Reduction
15. Number of the Authorizer re: the Promotion or Reduction
16. Rewards, Marks of Distinction and Favourable Records
17. Punishments
18. If Discharged, Dismissed, Resigned or Dead (and date of any)
19. Injuries
20. Total Service at time of Discharge
21. Pension Amount & other notations

Of the information in these 21 columns, the records transcribed here contain the material from the first 11 columns only. It is enough to try to figure out if one of them might be an ancestor. Since there are no identifying locations other than 'Cork', (Only 1 record actually has written in "Cork City"), I have included the name of the recommendation person, as this can often give a clue to location of the appointee. Frequently the person recommending is a large landowner, and the location can be inferred.

The complete service record in many cases is quite an impressive amount of information. In particular for those Catholic ancestors where no parish records might exist, the recording of a marriage can be of particular interest to family historians. Likewise the pension/death information.

If you find someone you think may be an ancestor, it is suggested you view the microfilm yourself for all the information in the service record. And of course if you want to know more about the RIC, Jim Herlihy's book would be the way to go.
