Griffiths (or the primary valuation) was carried out in Cork ER in 1852, it was arranged by County - Barony - Civil Parish - Townland. Because land continued to be bought and sold Griffiths was soon out of date and so a new valuation book was started but unlike Griffiths these books are arranged by District Electoral Division (DED) then townland. This format is similar to the census, the DEDs and their townlands are recorded on the 'film notes' for the 1911 census at www.familyhistory.org

These hand written books follow more or less the same format as Griffiths but with an additional 'Observations' column. When a change was made the old name was crossed out, the new written in above, and the date entered in the observations column. If there was more than one change on the line then the second was entered in a different coloured ink which allows the change and the date to be matched, this of course presents some challenges to users of microfilm which is in black and white. Eventually the book would become too full to be legible and a new book was started, the old book would then be 'cancelled'. For example, in the case of the DED of Killeagh there are nine books, the first starts in 1858 then approximately 1861, 1865, 1872, 1880, 1888., 1898, 1911, 1922. This last book finishes in 1950, although the system continued beyond that date the LDS church has only filmed the first nine books.

The series of films available through the LDS are divided up by district, then DED, all books for each DED are located on the same microfilm roll (i.e. each film covers the period c1858-1950). It is also worth noting that the books filmed by the LDS are the copies held by the Dublin Valuation Office and not the local copy.

After a six month wait I have finally received some films of the cancelled valuation books. Because I have seen very little written about this resource I thought it would be worthwhile explaining what they are and how to use them.

Griffiths (or the primary valuation) was carried out in Cork ER in 1852, it was arranged by County - Barony - Civil Parish - Townland. But because land continued to be bought and sold Griffiths was soon out of date and so in this area a new book was started in 1858. Unlike Griffiths the valuation books are arranged by District Electoral Division (DED), one way to locate the correct DED name is to use the notes for the 1911 census on the familysearch.org web site.

In the case of the DED of Killeagh there are nine books covering the period 1858-1950 or about an average of ten years each, although in practice it varies from about 5 years to 20 years.

It is also worth noting that the books filmed by the LDS are the copies held by Dublin and not the original which would have been held locally.

The LDS film nos for Youghal Rural District start at #0831245
