County Cork, Ireland, A Collection Of 1851 Census Records
Author: Josephine Masterson $17.50.
Only fragments of the 1851 census of Ireland are known to survive, and most
such fragments are for County Antrim, in the north. However, a little-known
census fragment for County Cork also survived the destruction of the Public
Record Office in 1922, and it is here transcribed and published for the first
time. It deals exclusively with the parishes of Kilcrumper Kilworth in County
and parts of Leitrim and Micron in the Union of Kilworth. The entries for the
parishes of Kilcrumpe and Kilworth appear to be inclusive of all of their
town lands however, the Records for Leitrim would appear to omit four town
lands and the Micron entries refer to only five of the parish's sixteen town
lands.
The census records themselves are arranged by house hold, just as they
appear in the original. For each households the following information is
provided: surname, given name age, relationship to the head of the household,
town land parish, page number of the original transcription, and, occasion,
remarks such as "widow," ³gone to America," and so on. The householder¹s
index at the back of the volume makes it easy to locate any of the 4,000
persons found in the census. If your missing Irish ancestor came from the
area of County Cork, here is an important new source you shouldn¹t fail to
consult. 117 pp., indexed, paper. (1994), repr. 1996. -

"In and Out of the Shadow"
Author: Liam Nolan
Publisher: Mount Eagle Publications Ltd., Dingle, Co. Kerry, Ireland
ISBN: 1 902011 05 8
** semi-autobiographical novel by Liam Nolan, who is well respected TV
journalist, writer and commentator here in England, and in Ireland.
It is a memorable and moving story of a young boy growing up in Cobh, Co. Cork during WW2. I know that this is a more modern period than when many of the ancestors on this group lived in Co. Cork, but it is still, in my opinion, well worth reading, to give the flavour of the way people spoke, interacted, the effect of religion and poverty on every day life - loads of things!
Kilnamartyra
For those researching family history in this townland, located
near Macroom, the following information is important.
Around 1995-1996 a group of parishioners banded together to create
a printed history of the parish. They gathered a bounty of information for
researchers. A fine map with small townlands is included; a history of the
old schools in the area along with teachers; a history of the parish church
and parish priests; a history and photos of old industries in the townland; a
history of the primary landowners in the area; old photos of natives of the
townland.
This is a book approx. 8" X 6" in size, soft 4 color cover and has 151 pages. In several places, Irish language poems and interviews are included along with English.
This book may be purchased for $13.50 US (which includes packaging and
postage,) by writing to:

The Famine Ships, The Irish Exodus to America'
Author: Edward Laxton
a review of this book made by Frank McLynn of The Irish Times:
"This is a splendid book, written in a fresh and accessible way, which will grip anyone with the most superficial interest in the Famine years....While not avoiding the narratives of the most famous emigrants of these years (Henry Ford's father from Cork and President J.F.Kennedy's great-grandfather from Wexford) he concetrates on lesser known stories: a good example is the Wexford parish priest who led eighteen families across the Atlantic to New Orleans and then up the Mississippi to found the town of Wexford, Iowa."
"Course of Irish History"

I have read many books on Irish history covering many eras. Perhaps my favorite as far as hitting the critical points and covering key moments. It is, of course, a compilation of the work of many, relatively inexpensive, and just really good general background.

The Search for Missing Friends: Irish Immigrant Advertisements Placed in

Most volumes are about 700 pages with thousands of advertisements seeking information on immigrants. They were placed in The Boston Pilot, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Boston by Irish seeking family & friends.
Each volume is indexed alphabetically by both surname and by geographical locality. They transcend the world in scope as can be seen by the one family advertisement I found below. Information provided often includes some variation of county, parish, townland, ports of debarkation, age, occupation, and relationships.

"A Topographical Index of the Parishes And Townlands of Ireland' In Sir
William Petty's Mss. Barony Maps. (c.1655-9)"
Author: Y.M. Goblet
Publisher: Mount Eagle Publications Ltd., Dingle, Co. Kerry, Ireland
ISBN: 0-8063-4928-X
Following the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland, Dr. William Petty was given the task of mapping the parishes of Ireland, a,project later to be known as the Down Survey. Although the 2,000 Parish Maps devised by Dr. Petty (later Sir William) were destroyed in the fires of the Dublin Court House in 1711 and of the Four Courts in 1922, over 200 Barony and county maps still remain, and they contain refernces to some 25,000 Irish placenames. The compiler of this work made a study of the barony maps, which at the time of this work's original publication in 1932 were discovered, in part, in the manuscript collection of the French Bibliotheque Nationale. As Goblet makes abundantly clear in his informative Introduction to the INDEX, the surviving Barony maps constitue possibly our greatest extant source of Irish placenames emanating from the 17th century.
The plan of the book is in two parts; namely, an alphabetically arranged list
of Irish parishes, followed by a similarly arranged but larger list of
Townlands. In the first case, the 17th century Parish name is given in Roman
as it appeared on the Barony Maps(Bibliotheque Nationale) and then in italics
in the version as found on the county maps (Hibernium Regnum). Then comes the
name of the Barony and initial or symbol of the county, followed by the
modern form of the Parish name. In the case of townlands, the 17th century
name is given (two versions), followed by the name of the parish and the
symbol of the county. Unavailable for many years and with references to more
than 25,000 placenames, Goblet's [work] is easily one of the premier sources
in all of Irish onomastics.
